The mapping of the melanocytic and other lesions of the skin is the only weapon we have in preventing skin cancer. The most common types of skin cancer are the Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), the Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) and the Malignant Melanoma (MM).
The procedure of mole mapping should be performed on an annual basis and it includes identification, recording and monitoring of all the suspicious or dysplastic lesions, usually nevi, by dermatoscopy (dermoscopy) using a specific high sensitivity multiple lenses instrument. When a high risk or a suspicious lesion is identified, then excisional biopsy under local anaesthetic is suggested whenever that’s possible.
The ideal timing for mole mapping in countries with extensive sun exposure like Greece, is in the Fall (Autumn), when we can detect changes invoked by the summertime long sun exposure.
